Is a Half Hour Enough to Lose Weight on the Treadmill?

It can be tough to find time to exercise when you lead a busy life. If you have just 30 minutes of downtime per day, resist the urge to crash on the couch -- instead, hop on the treadmill and get moving. A regular treadmill workout will benefit your body in a number of ways and even lead to weight loss. A single half-hour workout, however, won't burn enough calories to help you lose weight.

Losing Weight

As much as it would be ideal to lose a noticeable amount of weight after a short workout, you'll only lose weight through regular dedication to exercise. The secret to weight loss is to create a calorie deficit, which is the term that describes when your body burns more calories than it takes in through food and drink. When you reach a calorie deficit of 3,500 calories, you'll lose 1 pound of fat. A 30-minute treadmill workout can help you work toward creating a calorie deficit but, on its own, isn't enough to cause weight loss.

Treadmill Calories Burned

You can burn a considerable number of calories during a 30-minute workout on the treadmill, but the calories you'll burn will be far short of the 3,500 calories necessary to lose a pound. Running burns calories faster than walking, making it an ideal treadmill exercise to pursue if you wish to lose weight. A 185-pound person who runs for 30 minutes at 5 mph will burn 355 calories, reports Harvard Medical School. The same person can burn 444 calories running for 30 minutes at 6 mph and 555 calories running at 7.5 mph for 30 minutes.

Workout Considerations

Don't get discouraged because a 30-minute treadmill workout won't directly cause you to lose weight. If you're committed to improving your physical fitness, incorporate as many 30-minute treadmill workouts into your week as possible. Spending 300 minutes per week performing aerobic exercise is an effective way to lose weight but, even if you don't have this amount of time to spare, any length of treadmill workout is better than being sedentary.

Calorie Intake Considerations

Although increasing the amount of time you spend working out can help you lose weight, you'll drastically boost your odds of success if you cut your calorie intake at the same time. Instead of trying to find a diet that suits you, it's possible to cut your calorie intake through a number of simple steps. These steps include decreasing the size of your meals, reducing the amount of soda and alcohol you consume and skipping foods that are high in trans fats.
