A hygiene promoter is a person who helps others improve their personal sanitation practices. She often travels to areas where high concentrations of citizens desperately require education on the benefits of practicing proper hygiene, such as third-world countries. She teaches lessons instructing people on what constitutes proper hygiene and if necessary, teaches them how to perform such acts. Her lessons are tailored to fit the needs of the communities she works with, often incorporating additional education to fit the needs of citizens with disabilities.

Identify Community Needs

A hygiene promoter determines the specific needs of the community or group of people she’s working to assist. Based on these observations, he creates an effective plan of action designed to help the targeted group improve their hygiene practices. He’s responsible for finding appropriate spots in the community to hold educational sessions and determining if separate classes need to be set up for people of different genders or those with special needs.

Provide Education

It’s the hygiene promoter’s job to lead classes instructing people on how to improve their hygiene methods. She holds classes and informational sessions where she describes the importance of maintaining proper hygiene. If necessary, she demonstrates proper ways to maintain specific personal cleansing procedures and answers any subsequent questions.

Distribute Hygiene Kits

A hygiene promoter does his best to support ongoing hygiene practices in a community by distributing hygiene kits to residents. These kits include basic items one needs to stay fresh and clean. Items often include products like soap, a toothbrush, toothpaste, adhesive strips, nail clippers and other relevant products. He also helps educate families on stores where they can replenish these items for a low-cost, when they run out.

Coordinate Disease Prevention Efforts

Not only does a hygiene promoter help to improve the personal cleanliness of the group of people she’s working with, she does her best to teach them ways to prevent the spread of common sicknesses and diseases. For example, she may teach people how diarrhea is contracted and show them how to prevent the spread of this sickness. She might also teach them ways to properly care for loved ones who have contracted diarrhea. If other sicknesses like cholera are widespread in the area, she may provide education on spotting this illness, ways to provide treatment and tips to actively prevent future cases.
