Training and retaining employees with high morale should be the goal of every business. Happy workers are usually more attentive and productive than their unhappy counterparts. They take pride in their work, which helps sustain long-term consumer relationships. Unfortunately, measuring employee happiness isn’t as easy as pressing a button. There are many components that make up employee satisfaction levels. Besides, using a variety of indicators gives a more accurate measurement of employee morale.
Assess whether an “us vs. them” attitude exists between different work groups. Workplace discord decreases employee morale. Feuding departments produce unmotivated workers, which often equates to decreased workplace motivation. Pay attention to water cooler talk and office politics. Performing team-building exercises can help raise morale.
Administer anonymous employee satisfaction surveys. Ask questions about happiness with work procedures, management and career growth opportunities. Stress the importance of providing honest answers. Allow employees to complete the forms away from work, over several days. Encourage employees to write in concerns not covered by the survey. Offering an incentive for the timely return of the forms can boost participation.
Get the opinions of first-line supervisors. Managers in charge of day-to-day operations witness employee attitudes in action. They can spot trends in employee behavior and how these occurrences correspond to work habits. Ask about employee body language changes throughout the workday. Reward departments who achieve and maintain high performance standards.
Use customer satisfaction surveys. Happy employees treat their clients better than unhappy employees do. This usually results in more satisfied customers. Pay attention to recurring complaints of sour attitudes and botched orders, as well as any high praise. The most fulfilled employees usually give the most courteous service.
Review productivity metrics. This includes turnover rate, attendance and quality statistics. Workplaces with high turnover rates, escalating absenteeism and failing quality scores need to focus on building positive corporate culture. Workplaces with positive metrics need to focus on sustaining them.
Conduct an annual employee interview with each employee. Discuss satisfaction issues and feasible ways to increase overall workplace morale. Take note of recurring problems, and address them promptly. Failing to correct mistakes only breeds more dissatisfaction from employees.
