How to Add Electrolytes to Water

Your body requires electrolytes, positively and negatively charged ions, for healthy functioning. Minerals, such as potassium, calcium and sodium, dissolve and separate in water after consumption to form electrolytes. Your body has processes to keep your electrolytes in normal ranges. In many cases, a healthy diet provides all essential electrolytes you need every day. However, if you lose a lot of fluids rather quickly -- for example, because of vomiting, diarrhea or excessive sweating -- your electrolytes could become out of balance. You may consume sports drinks to replenish your electrolytes or you may make a homemade drink by adding electrolytes to water.

    Step 1

    Fill a container with water. Though it is not necessary, you could use coconut water, which naturally contains minerals, such as potassium, sodium and phosphorus.

    Step 2

    Add a small amount of salt to your water. Just one teaspoon of salt contains over 2,300 milligrams of sodium, which far exceeds the suggested daily allowance experts suggest.

    Step 3

    Include some citrus to your water to add more electrolytes. You can add orange, lime or lemon juice or even a combination of juices depending on your taste.

    Step 4

    Add honey to your electrolyte drink. Honey not only adds a sweet taste but it also provides necessary glucose that will replenish your energy.

    Step 5

    Mix your drink thoroughly by stirring or shaking and enjoy.
