The staff of a growing business faces many difficult challenges. Tempers can flare. Success involves more than meeting deadlines. It also means building lasting relationships. Training gives employees the tools and techniques for dealing with some of the emotional situations that inevitably occur during tight deadlines and tense meetings. Workplace emotional training typically involves a self-assessment exercise. When you recognize how your reactions to emotionally charged events affects your ability to function, you’re typically better able to control your own emotions and help others do so, as well.

Purpose

Conducting a workshop or seminar on workplace emotions gives people a chance to think about common situations and brainstorm solutions to problems. This prepares employees to deal with personal and professional issues that cause stress and emotional outbreaks at work. When people feel overwhelmed, lashing out at others is a natural reaction. You can avoid blame, confrontation and repressed anger by dealing with situations as they occur. Ignoring problems won’t make them go away for very long.

Workplace emotional training can help you accurately perceive your own emotions so that you can deal with others, use emotions to think critically and strategically, understand emotional meanings and manage the outcomes. Workplace emotional training may include inspirational videos and discussion groups that allow participants to talk about how emotions help people to achieve creative and innovative results. By sharing experiences, people from diverse cultural backgrounds can reach common ground.

Recognizing Personal Emotions

Everyone has emotions, but ignoring your innate nature minimizes your ability to lead authentically and achieve results. The key is to separate debilitating emotions from empowering ones, maintain a balance and stay in control. Effective leaders user their personal awareness to control impulses, exhibit resilience, empathize with others and inspire subordinates with confidence and optimism. Workplace emotional training typically includes role-playing exercises that allow pairs of participants to act out their reactions to threats and opportunities. For example, a facilitator divides a group into pairs and asks each pair to identify five words that trigger emotional responses. After 10 minutes, the facilitator gathers the whole group to compare lists and discuss how to react appropriately to workplace emotions. These exercises prepare employees for on-the-job situations, recover from damaging conflicts, handle other people’s anger and foster a positive environment.
