No one wants to have an exercise ball blow up on her in a class. Embarrassing. However, since these balls are a stretchy rubber, the possibility of a puncture or burst is always there. While some manufacturers advertise anti-burst stability balls, this does not guarantee against puncture. Choosing the correct exercise ball and caring for it properly is the only way to reduce risk of a blowout. The best ball is the ball that you take proper care of.

Burst Resistant

Some exercise balls offer anti-burst protection. However, this does not mean the balls are unbreakable rubber and will never puncture. It does mean a reduced chance of you sitting on a ball that bursts and sends you crashing to the floor. Anti-burst balls, when punctured, slowly lose air. Instead of crashing to the floor, you will slowly sink. This is a safety feature, but does not protect against puncture.

Choose the Correct Ball Size

Reducing the risk of an exercise ball embarrassment begins with choosing the correct ball. This comes down to size and weight. Starting with height, you should be able to sit on your ball with your feet flat on the floor and your knees at a 90-degree angle. To determine this measurement, ask a friend for help. Stand with your back against a wall and drop down into a seated position, as if you were sitting on a ball. Have your friend mark that spot on the wall and, using a measuring tape, measure the height. This is the height your ball should be. For weight, look at the guidelines that come with your ball. There will be maximums for both static weight and dynamic weight. The static weight looks at your basic weight when just sitting on the ball. Dynamic weight takes bouncing, movement and additional free weights into consideration. Make sure you are not exceeding the ball’s guidelines.

Focus on Proper Inflation

When you buy your exercise ball, look for the inflation instructions and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations. A properly inflated exercise ball should compress about six inches when you sit on it. Overinflating your exercise ball increases the risk of puncture and burst. Check inflation regularly to be sure there is no air loss.

Housekeeping

Keeping your exercise ball and your exercise area clean and debris-free reduces the risk of it bursting. Before exercising, make sure the floor is clean. Remove sharp objects that could puncture the ball's surface. Keep the ball debris-free by cleaning it regularly with mild detergent and warm water.
